The history
A Brief History of the Hilltop Hotel. The story of the Hilltop Hotel starts with a hill. In 1893, a group of Tacoma businessmen created the Washington Trust Company to fund the construction of a luxury hotel on top of that hill. They called it Tacoma’s Hilltop. The hotel opened its doors to guests on December 24, 1894. Originally named Washington, it was one of the first hotels west of Chicago with an indoor plumbing system, and the largest west-of-Chicago luxury hotel when it opened. Over the years, some say it resembled a castle more than a hotel because of its imposing stone walls and towers topped by crenelated battlements.

Built-in 1868, this former plantation house is one of Virginia’s most iconic structures. The mansion was originally built as a summer retreat for wealthy Virginian George Washington Custis Lee and his wife, Mary Anna Randolph Custis. It was constructed on land granted to General Robert E. Lee by President Abraham Lincoln after General Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House. Because of its location on top of a mountain, there were lots of visitors who wanted to stay at the hotel but weren’t able to make the trek up due to its steep incline. To make things easier for them, people started using donkeys and later horses to haul those who couldn’t climb up the hill.
